Top 5 West-End shows for first timers

6th December 2018

One of the things I’ve really grown to love in the recent months are musicals. Perhaps with the help of The Greatest Showman and A Star is Born, I’ve realised that I never really disliked them, I just needed to find ones that suit me.

With over forty theatres, London’s West-End is the PLACE to go. Whether you’re a seasoned theatre-goer or it’s your first time seeing a show, a trip to the West-End is an experience everyone should have at least once. You can get your hands on tickets, cheap last-minute included, and loads of helpful tips and tricks from experts at Encore Tickets.

If you’re also a newbie to the world of theatre and don’t know where to start, there are plenty of shows to get you started. They’re best-sellers for a reason and will draw you in from the moment they begin…

The Lion King

Lyceum Theatre

Booking until June 2019

The longstanding multi award-winning favourite is now in its 19th year, making it one of the longest running shows in the West-End. Currently playing at the Lyceum Theatre, The Lion King is a powerful performance that tells the tale of the 1994 Disney classic through vivid costumes, spectacular special effects and a memorable soundtrack from Elton John.

Apollo Victoria Theatre

Booking until November 2019

Another longstanding favourite, Wicked is currently in its 13th year. The alternative story behind The Wizard of Oz tells the untold tale of the witches of Oz and the struggles and triumphs of friendship and betrayal. You have probably already heard some of the show’s best hits including ‘Defying Gravity‘ and ‘The Wizard and I‘ and seeing them performed live amongst the mesmerising (and very green) set will be an experience like no other.

Mamma Mia!

Novello Theatre

Booking until September 2019

Opening in 1999, Mamma Mia! has been enthralling audiences for almost 20 years. Transport yourself to sunny Greece with a story of love, friendship and identity told through ABBA‘s greatest hits. It’s one of the most successful shows in history, with an audience of over 60 million people around the world- and two movies based upon it!

Savoy Theatre

Booking until January 2019

Oscar nominated music, six-time Tony winning performances and studies showing that watching Dreamgirls can stimulate your cardiovascular system to the same extent as doing 28 minutes of cardiovascular exercise, the iconic performance is a feel-good hit based on R&B music acts of 1960s America. Telling the story of a young female singing trio from Chicago, Illinois called ‘The Dreams’, Dreamgirls follows the three ladies as they learn that show business is just as tough as it is fabulous.

Matilda the Musical

Cambridge Theatre

Booking until May 2020

Winner of 7 Oliver Awards and 4 Tony Awards, Matilda the Musical has wowed audiences on the West-End for 7 years. Produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company, Matilda the Musical is based on Roald Dahl’s beloved classic children’s novel. A musical perfect for all the family, the much-loved tale of Matilda is truly a feast for the eyes.
