Going to the theatre is a wonderful experience but unfortunately, it can be quite a pricey one. However, there are a few ways you can bag yourself tickets to your favourite shows for less. Whether you’re heading to the West End, a National Tour or are taking a trip stateside for a Broadway show or two, here are some of the best tried and tested tips and tricks to get yourself some cheap theatre tickets. See you at the stage door!
If you can, head to the theatre on a weekday afternoon. Matinee theatre performances tend to be less expensive than the night time showings and the price band can also be different, meaning you’ll get better seats for less.
Same goes for weekday performances – the tickets will usually be cheaper than those for weekend shows.
Enter the lottery
Many of the big shows run daily lotteries where you can enter and win cheap tickets. Lotteries can be entered either online or via the box office for performances a few days or hours before, depending on the show and venue. You’ll need to check with each show individually, but for example, at The Book of Mormon in Manchester, you head to the box office 2 1/2 hours before each performance and enter, with 15 tickets being drawn half an hour later. These tickets are strictly limited at 2 per person.
Go last minute with day tickets
Go spontaneous and grab a bargain with day tickets. Box offices generally hold a certain number of tickets for same day release and you’ll get them at a very good discounted rate. Increase your chances of getting same day tickets. and head to the box office on a two-show day. There’s also a fab app called TodayTix where you can download same day discounted rush tickets, depending on availability.

2 for 1 tickets
Want to get your hands on some Broadway tickets? Broadway Week offers 2 for 1 theatre tickets on some of the biggest and best shows that New York City has to offer.
Get cheap Broadway tickets via trusted marketplaces
Another great way to bag yourself cheap Broadway tickets is with trusted marketplaces such as Vivid Seats, which is North America’s leading independent ticket marketplace. They have excellent customer service, 100% buyer guarantee and cheap last-minute tickets to some of the biggest shows in theatre.
Head to a National tour
Living up North, tickets are generally cheaper than those in London. The £20 stalls tickets I got for Kinky Boots in Blackpool? They probably would’ve cost double the price if I had bought them for the West End performance. Plus then there’s the issue of £100 train tickets from Manchester to London. Obviously, if you live in London, seeing a West End show is a no brainer, but if you’re not from the Capital, then consider seeing a show locally and you’ll see a big difference in both ticket and travel costs.
You might get an upgrade
Theatres want their seats filled, so if you buy tickets in the cheapest part of the theatre, usually the furthest seats back in the upper circle, you may get lucky and get an upgrade. If you don’t automatically get upgraded and you’re at a weekday performance, you can always try your luck and ask – politely!
